Cold, wet weather in the Thanksgiving travel forecast
Cold and dry conditions will prevail in the forecast from Monday afternoon through early Wednesday morning, with scattered, cold rain showers expected to overspread the region Wednesday afternoon and into Wednesday night, with wet snow possible in areas north of I-70.
ST. LOUIS -- What's the weather look like for the Thanksgiving holiday? A lot of people plan to travel and the forecast may be cold, wet, and possibly slick.
Cold and dry will be the key features in the forecast from Monday afternoon through early Wednesday morning. However, a new weather system will cross the region Wednesday midday through late Wednesday night. This feature has been a moving target on the long range charts, but if you've been following along on our broadcasts, you know we have been sticking to the "cold rain" forecast for the most part with only a small window for some wet snow possibilities as the rain ends Wednesday night. That looks like a solid forecast at this point.
Scattered, cold, rain showers will overspread much of the region by Wednesday afternoon and continue into Wednesday nnight. As the air continues to cool, some potential exists for wet, sloppy snow to mix with the rain north of I-70 after sunset Wednesday. This would mainly impact areas north of I-70 in Illinois.
With temperatures at the surface still several degrees above freezing and the overall marginal temperature set-up, I would not expect anything more than wet roads along I-70 in Illinois for the heavy travel times Wednesday afternoon/evening.
Behind this weather system, even colder air will surge into the region with high temperatures on Thanksgiving struggling to reach 40 degrees. Looking ahead to next weekend, there are signs of a clipper system that will bring a chance for some light snow or flurries across the region on Saturday.
