Cold snap to bring sub-zero wind chills across Chicago this week
After a few unseasonably mild days, a cold front bringing sub-zero wind chills will make its way through the Chicago area beginning Tuesday. Temperatures Monday afternoon reached the 50s, and although the warmth may have felt odd following the freezing temperatures last week — it's not so unusual, according to Jake Petr, lead meteorologist with the National Weather Service. "There's typically an average of three days in December with 50 degree or higher temperature," Petr said. But this week's mild days would be followed by plunging temps. Today will be another mild day with clearing skies and highs in the lower 50s. Don’t get used to it, though, as temperatures will tumble midweek. The coldest days are expected to be Wednesday and Thursday. "There’s going to be a dip in the roller coaster midweek before it warms up slightly," Petr said. Temperatures Wednesday were expected to reach the mid 20s during the day before dipping down to the single digits at night. On Thursday, temps will reach highs in the 10s before again dropping down to the single digits. However, the low temperatures combined with gusty winds were forecast to push the wind chills as cold as minus-20 degrees. A few flurries or snow showers were also possible Wednesday and Thursday, Petr said. By Friday, temps will pick back up into the 30s.
