On Saturday the city of San Diego will host the fifth and final in a series of community workshops to share information about the Ocean Beach Pier Renewal project and gather input from San Diegans from noon to 3 p.m.

The event is at Liberty Station Conference Center 2600 Laning Road inSan Diego

City staff and engineering consultants will share updates to amenities and features of the preferred pier design concept for a potential replacement for the 58-year-old Ocean Beach Pier. The concept was released in April and the latest updates are based on public input received since then.

The preferred design concept is the result of an extensive community engagement process and features elements from three preliminary design concepts that were unveiled in September 2023.

This will be the final community workshop for this stage of the project, and the team will share the next steps as part of the long-term plan. City staff will continue to work on acquiring the proper environmental permits and funding for the project. The current estimated cost range for the Ocean Beach Pier Renewal project is $170 million to $190 million.

After it was damaged by high surf in October 2023, the Ocean Beach Pier has remained closed for public access. Additional and more significant damage occurred in December 2023 when a support bracket – or “pile” – broke off and fell into the ocean. Engineering teams have determined that any work to rehabilitate the pier is not feasible, especially given the likelihood of additional damage occurring during future winter storms, and that the safest and most cost-effective option is to keep the structure closed while the city moves forward with a long-term solution to replace the pier.
