ST. LOUIS – A St. Louis City employee is accused of filing false worker's compensation claims for injuries she says she suffered while at work.
An investigator with the Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations' Division of Workers' Compensation, Fraud, and Noncompliance Unit filed a probable cause statement in September, alleging Veronica Washington "knowingly presented a fraudulent claim for the payment of benefits pursuant to a workers' compensation claim..."
Authorities said Washington claimed to have stumbled on some steps and tumbled into a wall on Nov. 3, 2021, injuring her left shoulder, back, and hip in the process. She repeated those claims on Nov. 20, Nov. 24, and Dec. 14.
Investigators obtained surveillance video from the job site that day. They said that the video does not "depict a stumbling or falling incident as Ms. Washington described, which she reported caused her injuries."
The probable cause statement does not identify which city agency or department Washington was working for.
The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office charged Washington with knowingly presenting a false worker’s comp claim and three counts of violating provisions regarding claims for worker’s comp benefits. Washington was issued a summons to appear in court on Dec. 2.
