California health dept. issues warning over drug-laced chocolate bars

State health officials warned consumers on Friday not to eat PolkaDot brand Mushroom Magic Blend Chocolate Bars as they have had psychoactive drugs added to them.

According to the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), the PolkaDot brand Mushroom Magic Blend Chocolate Bars were sold both online and at physical stores throughout California.

The bars were labeled as containing the food additive amanita muscaria, a type of mushroom. Laboratory testing has established that the bars contained an additional synthetic psychoactive drug.

The bars known to be affected are:

  • Belgian milk chocolate caramel peanut twist
  • Belgian milk chocolate intense dark
  • Belgian milk chocolate Maui coconut twist

Pictures of the recalled bars can be seen below:

State health officials warn that eating the chocolate bars has the potential to cause illness, hospitalization, and possibly even death. Young children are considered particularly at risk as the bars could be mistaken for regular chocolate bars.

No illnesses associated with the PolkaDot brand Mushroom Magic Blend Chocolate Bars have been reported at this time. The state reports that over $3 million worth of PolkaDot brand chocolate bars have been destroyed.
