Buffs journey to Big 12 title in jeopardy after loss to Kansas

DENVER (KDVR) — Saturday was a rough day for the University of Colorado Buffaloes as they took a big blow from the Kansas Jayhawks in their quest to play for the Big 12 title.
The Buffs traveled to Kansas City to get a taste of the NFL life and played at Arrowhead Stadium -- the home of the Chiefs.
However, CU couldn't pull out a fifth straight win, ultimately losing to the Jayhawks 37-21. The Jayhawks (5-6, 4-4) scored on every offensive series but their last, keeping Colorado stars Shedeur Sanders and Heisman Trophy candidate Travis Hunter standing on the sideline.
Sanders finished with 266 yards passing and three touchdowns, setting the Colorado single-season record with 30 TD passes, while Hunter finished with eight catches for 125 yards and two scores. But the two-way standout did little on defense — nor did anyone else wearing all-white uniforms — as the Jayhawks beat a ranked team for a school-record third straight week.
The Buffs aren't out of the Big 12 championship just yet, but they'll need some Folsom Field magic to make it to the big game. CU will need to beat Oklahoma State at home on Friday to get some more help for a spot.
Aside from a CU win, another 6-2 team would need to win their game, and both 7-2 teams would automatically advance to the championship. However, things get a bit complicated if three teams end up with a tied record at 7-2.
In the scenario where the Buffs win and have a conference record of 7-2, there are two situations in which CU gets to play in the conference championship – both require BYU to lose to Houston and Texas Tech to beat West Virginia.
The first situation would occur if Baylor defeats Kansas and Cincinnati defeats TCU. In this case, CU would face Iowa State in the Big 12 championship.
The other situation, which occurs in any other outcome for the Baylor and TCU games, CU will face Arizona State in the conference championship.
If all four teams that are currently 6-2 win this weekend, the championship will be between Arizona State and Iowa State.
Only time will tell if the Buffs make it to the championship game. The game against Oklahoma State kicks off at 10 a.m. Friday.
Head coach Deion Sanders will speak ahead of the final regular season game on Tuesday at the University of Colorado Boulder at around 11 a.m.
