SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- One of the oldest high school sports rivalries in the country is taking its annual basketball matchup to San Francisco's biggest basketball stage. For the first time, the Bruce-Mahoney basketball game will be played at the Chase Center.

The St. Ignatius College Preparatory and Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory boys and girls basketball games will be played at the Warriors' home arena on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2025, it was announced Wednesday.

For years, the historic rivalry game had been played at War Memorial Gym on the University of San Francisco's campus. In other years, the game took place at Kezar Pavilion.

This won't be the first time a Bruce-Mahoney matchup will take place at a pro sports venue. The baseball game has previously taken place at the San Francisco Giants' Oracle Park.

The Bruce-Mahoney game dates back to 1947 and is named after SHC graduate Jerry Mahoney '44 and SI graduate Bill Bruce '35 -- two individuals who lost their lives in service during World War II. According to school officials, the rivalry between SHC and SI is one of the oldest in the country, dating back to 1893.

Traditionally, the schools face off in football, men’s basketball, baseball, women’s volleyball and women’s basketball. Those games are at stake for the coveted Bruce-Mahoney trophy.

The first school to win three out of the five matchups wins the trophy.

The basketball games will not be streamed online, according to SHC. Tickets will go on sale to the general public on Thursday, Dec. 5 at 10 a.m. They can be purchased on Chase Center's official ticket retailer Ticketmaster.
