Days after police made several arrests in the execution-style killing of a Woodland Hills doctor, his grieving brother is speaking out, sharing the family’s heartbreak and calling for justice.
“It looked like a Mafia assassination, it’s strange,” said the victim’s brother, Dr. Alireza Mirshojae, in an exclusive interview with KTLA’s Carlos Saucedo. “Someone really wanted him dead – dead, not wounded. He didn’t even see it coming.”
Alireza’s late brother, Hamid Mirshojae, 61, was walking to his car in the parking lot outside of his clinic on Aug. 23 when he was shot and killed in an “ambush-style attack,” according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
“It’s a huge hurt, it’s indescribable,” said Alireza. “It’s a great loss for me and it’s a great loss for his children.”
Amidst the devastation of losing his brother, Alireza said his entire family is still in shock, especially now that the primary suspect has been revealed.
Authorities allege Hamid’s ex-wife, Ahang Mirshojae — also known as Ahang Zarrin Kelk — was involved in the fatal shooting. She is one of five people arrested last week in connection with the August slaying.
The suspected gunman, Evan Hardman, was arrested in Texas, while Ashley Sweeting was taken into custody as an alleged accessory. Police say the murder may have been financially motivated, though a clear motive has not been disclosed.
However – legal, bitter divorce battles between Hamid and his ex-wife had been going on for years. The doctor had recently remarried and welcomed a child.
“We were planning our retirement plans and we were talking about what we were gonna be doing and how we’re gonna spend it,” Alireza said, reflecting on the life his brother had hoped to build. “It never materialized.”
The loss comes during an already challenging year for the family, as their father battles pancreatic cancer. Alireza said the family remains focused on seeking justice for Hamid.
“My wish is for the killers to get punished to the maximum extent of the law,” he said. “A lifetime sentence is not enough for them, but that’s what we have.”
The investigation remains ongoing.
