David Shaw is a coach. It is how he is viewed and known after his mostly terrific work at Stanford.

So as he interviewed for multiple jobs this offseason, it felt inevitable that the Broncos executive would return to the sideline. He found a new home Thursday, finishing up a multi-year contract to join the Lions as their passing game coordinator, a league source confirmed.

Shaw, 52, had an in when seeking the spot. Former Broncos passing game coordinator John Morton landed Detroit’s offensive coordinator position earlier this week. It marks the latest loss for the Broncos as teams have hired away several of their coaches and front office personnel this offseason.

Shaw, hired as a senior personnel executive last June, joins Darren Mougey in leaving general manager George Paton’s staff. The Jets hired Mougey, the Broncos’ former assistant GM, as their GM this week.

Denver boasts several coaching vacancies after an eventful offseason. Special teams coordinator Ben Kotwica and linebackers coach Greg Manusky were let go. And Morton (Lions), tight ends coach Declan Doyle (Bears offensive coordinator) and Chris Banjo (Jets special teams coordinator) all landed promotions with other teams.

Darren Rizzi is a name to keep an eye on for the Broncos special teams boss position if he does not land the Saints head coaching job.

NFL Network was first to report that Shaw was leaving for the Lions.
