DENVER (KDVR) — A popular Boulder trail that leads to a mighty waterfall is closed following a recent rockslide.

On Tuesday, the city of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks Department said it temporarily closed access to Boulder Falls in the Boulder Canyon after a rockslide damaged the trail.

Boulder Falls offers access to a waterfall just a 10th of a mile from Boulder Canyon Drive. The short and easy walk has made it a popular destination for locals and tourists to witness the crashing water.

The falls have often been referred to as the "Yosemite of Boulder Canyon" and have been popular for picnic groups.

The falls are located 11 miles west of Boulder between the city and Nederland. But for the foreseeable future, hikers will have to find a different waterfall to chase.

The Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks Department believes recent weather likely triggered soil movement and caused the slide.

The department said the slide damaged key trail infrastructure that keeps rocks and sediment from sliding down the hillside.

"Trails are always susceptible to natural hazards and weather events, and OSMP reminds visitors to stay alert while recreating outdoors," said the Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks Department in a release.

Right now, the department is assessing the trail damage to determine what is needed for repairs and maintenance. At this time, there is no estimated timeline for when the falls will reopen. More information will be released as the department learns more.

Boulder hikers can visit the department's website for more information on current trail closures.
