Blue Island officer expected to face charges after shooting at Chicago officer during road rage incident, police sources say

CHICAGO - A Blue Island police officer is expected to be charged after an alleged road rage incident Saturday morning.

Police sources told WGN News an off-duty Chicago police officer - who is currently on maternity leave - was in the passenger seat of a GMC near 47th and Halstead at around 5 p.m. Saturday when the GMC got involved in a minor crash with a Toyota as part of an alleged road rage incident.

The Toyota was reportedly driven by a 47-year-old off-duty Blue Island police officer, the only occupant of that vehicle.

After the crash, sources told WGN News the Blue Island police officer allegedly drove up next to the GMC, pulled out a gun and fired one shot, which ricocheted off the Toyota's windshield on the passenger side.

It's believed the vehicles then pursued each other for a few miles before both were eventually pulled over by an Illinois State Police Trooper near 54th and Wentworth where the Blue Island police officer was taken into custody.

The Blue Island officer was also initially taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center as he was complaining of chest pain, according to sources. No other injuries were reported.

WGN News is not releasing the name of the Blue Island officer as charges have yet to be officially filed.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
