Bicyclist killed in Oakland crash
According to witnesses, the man was riding downhill when he ran into a guard rail.
OAKLAND — A 44-year-old bicyclist died Monday after crashing into a guard rail in North Oakland, authorities said.
The name of the man, who police said was an Emeryville resident, has not been released pending notification of his family.
The fatal crash happened about 4:52 p.m. Monday in the 3500 block of Dwight Way, in the Claremont hills.
Police said that according to witnesses the man was riding his bicycle westbound, downhill, when he ran into a guard rail, causing him to be ejected from the bicycle onto the roadway.
The man, who police said was not wearing a helmet, suffered injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police continue to investigate the crash and said they have not determined if alcohol or drugs were factors in what happened. Anyone with information may contact police traffic investigators at 510-777-8570.
