Be prepared for the next high country cold wave

SILVERTHORNE, Colo. (KDVR) -- Thousands are visiting high country resorts ahead of the holidays. Heavy traffic is expected during peak travel times this month along the I-70 corridor.
Many taking a break from the ski slopes are flocking to see holiday attractions that include beautiful light displays in charming mountain towns like Idaho Springs, Georgetown, Silverthorne, Keystone, Dillon, Frisco, Breckenridge, Winter Park and others.
“It's just beautiful any time of the year,” one tourist told FOX31.
Traffic delays are most likely to occur on Sunday evenings.
“Everyone's just following everybody else,” said a skier traveling past the Eisenhower Tunnel.
Ski resorts report that the most recent storm in November brought this season’s snow totals to more than 43 inches in some areas.
Colorado State Patrol has already written more than 400 traction law citations this season, which is down from 542 citations during this season last year. CSP says the increased compliance is a result of more frequent checks and improved interaction with the trucking industry.
CSP warns that not following chain laws can result in penalties, crashes and liability for drivers.
Motorists should carry and understand how to properly use chains, make sure tires have a minimum tread depth of 3/16 of an inch and use tires rated for use in mud and snow.
Drivers can check their route before leaving at cotrip.org which also provides weather conditions, chain law activations and closure updates. Information about Colorado's expanded chain law requirements effective this year are featured on CDOT's website.
