ST. LOUIS - Crews are planning to demolish an old pedestrian bridge for Barnes-Jewish Hospital this weekend, which will prompt some traffic shutdowns near the hospital until the demolition is complete.
The demolition process will entail removing all the glass and then dismantling the steel elements of the bridges into pieces. Demolition could begin as soon as 6 a.m. Saturday.
Access to Barnes Jewish Hospital Plaza will be shut down as crews work to demolish the bridge.
Detours around the medical campus to the hospital main entrance will begin at 5 p.m. Friday, while the Barnes Jewish Hospital Plaza roadways are expected to reopen around 6 a.m. Monday.
The old pedestrian bridge opened in the late 1980s to connect an underground plaza garage to the lobby of the hospital. It allowed patients and visitors to enter the hospital without crossing traffic.
A new, wider pedestrian bridge to the hospital in a similar location opened in August.
