DENVER (KDVR) -- Many airport travelers worry about parking at the Denver International Airport due to vehicle theft.

"There's been a lot of thefts at the airport," said Bill Lobosco.

But airport officials told FOX31 that the number of auto thefts at the airport is down 62% from last year. From January to November of 2023, there were 716 reports of auto theft at the airport, and in the same period in 2024 there were 273.

"We are in a much better place this year than we were last year," said Lt. Col. Josh Downing with the Colorado State Patrol. Downing is also a board member of the Colorado Auto Theft Prevention Authority. "I would feel more comfortable with leaving your car and going on vacation," he said.

DIA has made recent security improvements including the addition of 11 HALO cameras, new barriers at parking lots and an increased presence of security officers.

Upcoming changes include the addition of 200 high-resolution cameras, data storage equipment, and expanded use of license plate reader technology.

Downing says the area surrounding the airport is seeing big drops in auto theft as well. Law enforcement has focused on these areas and hotels have improved their security.

Plus, suspects in two major car theft rings at the airport have been arrested in recent months and Downing says that is having a big impact.
