Authorities are searching for the driver who struck and killed a grandmother in a hit-and-run crash in Carson.
On Aug. 31, Cherise Johnson, 54, was walking across the intersection of Del Amo Boulevard and Tillman Avenue at around 6 p.m. when a driver in a white SUV struck her.
The suspect continued speeding away and did not stop to check on the injured woman, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Johnson later died from her injuries.
The make and model of the suspect’s SUV remains unknown, however, witnesses told police the vehicle may have front-end damage. The vehicle was captured on a nearby surveillance camera, however, the image is unclear.
On Nov. 6, Carson city council members approved a $25,000 reward for information leading to the suspect’s identification and arrest.
“We sympathize with the victim’s family and hope that this reward will assist in expediting the identification, arrest and conviction of those who caused this tragedy,” said Carson Mayor Lula Davis-Holmes. “This could’ve happened to anyone. I’m calling on all of our Carson family. If anyone has any information to assist the Carson’s Sheriff's Station, please come forward.”
"Detectives from Carson Station are dedicated to thoroughly investigating and resolving this tragic accident,” said Alise Norman, Carson Sheriff’s Station Captain. “I urge anyone with information to come forward to help us bring justice to Ms. Johnson and her family."
Anyone with information is asked to contact Carson Sheriff's Station Traffic Bureau Investigator R. Long or Investigator C. Sam at 310-830-1123 or email carsontraffic@lasd.org.
