Austin airport's new concourse project soars ahead with $33M federal funding award

AUSTIN (KXAN) — More than $33 million from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will support the construction of a new concourse at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, AUS officials announced Thursday.

The Federal Aviation Administration's Airport Terminal Program is allocating $33.27 million to the project. The funding is designed to support both the construction of Concourse B as well as the new underground tunnel connecting Concourse B with the existing Barbara Jordan Terminal.

As part of the Journey With AUS airport expansion program, Concourse B will bring a minimum of 20 new airline gates to AUS, along with additional restaurants, shops, lounges and traveler amenities. Substantial construction work on the project is set to begin in 2027 with the hope of opening the new facility to the public "as early as the year 2030," per AUS' Thursday release.

Thus far, the Concourse B project has received more than $47 million from the FAA's Airport Terminal Program. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law includes an approximately $1 billion allocation to airport terminals across the U.S.

“This funding will aid us in delivering a bigger, better AUS that will be able to meet the air service needs of generations to come. We know our airline partners are eager to expand services from Austin and our teams are working hard to deliver not just the Concourse B project but the full suite of projects under our expansion program that will truly transform Austin-Bergstrom," AUS CEO Ghizlane Badawi said in the release. "We can’t thank our partners at the FAA enough for their support. I also want to thank our congressional delegation for their continued advocacy for AUS to ensure we have the federal resources needed to deliver the expansion.”
