AFD: 500+ emergency calls made during severe weather Wednesday

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Fire Department said it received 500 to 600 calls during Wednesday’s severe weather.
Many of those calls were for water rescues of people being swept away.
According to AFD, one call turned fatal after a body was recovered from Lady Bird Lake near 49th Street on Thursday morning. AFD said the call started at Hancock Creek after witnesses reported several people being washed away.
The Austin Police Department was able to rescue one person, and a second person got out of the water safely, according to AFD. However, a third person died, and their body was later recovered.
On Wednesday night, Austin-Travis County EMS said it responded to a water rescue near the 2200 block of West North Loop Boulevard for reports of two people in the water. One person was removed, but the rescue effort for the second person transitioned to recovery mode.
