4 Patriots offensive assistants not returning for 2025 season, per report

Four Patriots offensive assistants will not be returning for the 2025 season, according to ESPN.

Running backs coach Taylor Embree, wide receivers coach Tyler Hughes, assistant wide receivers coach Tiquan Underwood and tight ends coach Bob Bicknell became the latest to part ways with the organization Friday.

All four joined the Patriots’ coaching staff last year under Jerod Mayo. Only Hughes had prior experience in New England, serving as a low-level assistant from 2020-22 before spending the 2023 season at the University of Washington.

Under their leadership, the Patriots offense averaged 17 points per game, third-worst in the league. The tight ends were the only position group that performed consistently, while Embree’s running backs dealt with fumbling problems and none of the young wideouts developed under Hughes and Underwood. Second-round rookie Ja’Lynn Polk finished with a dozen catches in 15 games, while fourth-rounder Javon Baker had one in 11 game appearances.

The futures of offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, quarterbacks coach T.C. McCartney and offensive line coach Scott Peters remain unknown. The holdover defensive staff consists of defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery, inside linebackers coach Dont’a Hightower, outside linebackers coach Drew Wilkins, cornerbacks coach Mike Pellegrino and safeties coach Brian Belichick.

Wilkins and assistant offensive line coach Robert Kugler were recently selected to coach at the East-West Shrine Bowl, an annual showcase for all-star draft prospects in Las Vegas.

Defensive coordinator DeMarcus Covington reportedly interviewed for the same position in Cincinnati earlier this week. Covington was promoted from defensive line coach to coordinator last year.

Defensive coaching assistant Keith Jones left last week to become a defensive assistant at Appalachian State.
