Web3 gaming is not just a flash in the pan and is now making a compelling argument that it represents the future of video games, merging entertainment with blockchain to provide greater benefits to game players.

By building video games on a decentralized ledger, developers can enhance the gaming experience in many ways, with asset ownership and cryptocurrency-based rewards enabling players to generate real value from their experiences. Blockchain can also improve security, protecting user’s accounts from hackers, and it can improve transparency too, ensuring fairness in games.

These benefits explain why blockchain-based games are getting the attention of some real-world video games developers, with top names like Ubisoft and Consensys being fully signed-up members of the Blockchain Game Alliance. Both companies are developing their first play-to-earn games, and we can expect to see many more games embracing Web3 capabilities in the months and years to come.

We might still be waiting for the first true AAA-style games to make their debut on the blockchain, but Web3 gaming already boasts a number of extremely innovative and promising gaming platforms, and these are the ones worth watching:

1: Funtico

With Funtico churning out new and exciting play-to-earn games at an extremely rapid rate, it has fast emerged as one of the top incentivized gaming platforms in the business, with a library of titles spanning genres like racing, fantasy adventure and casino games.

Funtico encourages developers to focus more on the actual gameplay rather than the economic aspects of their games, in an effort to avoid the problems that plagued first-generation play-to-earn games like Axie Infinity. That game, once king of Web3 games, ultimately ended up boring many players to death, with a detrimental impact on its native token’s value.

The idea is that developers can just design games that are fun to play, focusing on creating absorbing gameplay, rich graphics and such, while leaving the incentives to Funtico itself. Developers simply create their games and integrate them with Funtico’s platform, which provides access to the TICO token for in-game rewards.

Funtico games also simplify the onboarding process for new gamers. Each new player signs up as they would with any Web2-based service, using an email, and they’ll gain access to a newly-generated crypto wallet that’s controlled by Funtico. More experienced players, who know what they’re doing, can withdraw their TICO tokens to a non-custodial wallet if they desire.

In doing this, Funtico solves one of the major problems in Web3 gaming, which is getting players to understand and embrace the blockchain and crypto aspects. They earn TICO as they play games and win battles or challenges, and those tokens act much like any regular in-game currency, and can be used to buy in-game items. But because they’re actually crypto tokens, players can also sell them for real money, or transfer them to buy items in other Funtico games.

Funtico has plans to massively expand its library of games in the new year, with titles like EV2, an MMORPG-style adventure game; Shark Fin Frenzy, an underwater predator game; and Tico Bar, a slot machine-style game with provable fairness.

2. GAMEE

GAMEE is a platform for casual blockchain games that has scored some notable partnerships with entities like the Guinness Book of Records, Man City football club, NASA and Atari, collaborating with them to deliver a rich selection of entertaining Web3 games.

Led by its CEO Bozena Rezab, the GAMEE platform has emerged as one of the top Web3 gaming platforms with more than 75 million registered users and over 9.2 billion gameplay sessions at the last count. It’s notable as one of the top gaming bots on the Telegram messenger app, which integrates many of its games.

It’s most popular game on Telegram is the “tap-to-earn” title WatBird, with more than three million daily active players, and it’s also the creator of Arc8 Games, which offers a selection of competitive, multiplayer games, sich as 8 Ball Moca, Moca Mania and Into the Mocaverse, plus a number of card games, puzzle games and sports games.

Players compete in GAMEE games using a Beastie, which is an in-game character with unique attributes and can be leveled up by feeding it with various types of food. Players purchase food with GMEE tokens, which can be earned by regularly playing and winning its various games. Should the player level up their Beastie to Level 16, they’ll be able to mint it as an NFT, meaning that they own it – and can sell it if they wish.

Having attracted more than 10 million connected wallets, GAMEE is playing a key role in onboarding the masses to the world of Web3 gaming, and its association with Telegram means it can still tap into a much bigger audience.

3. Gala Games

A play-to-earn gaming platform that launched back in 2020, Gala Games was one of the first movers in the Web3 gaming industry. Its platform is based on the GALA token, which is the native cryptocurrency that spans an extensive library of games catering to every kind of taste.

Some of the most notable titles available through Gala Games include its flagship game Town Star, which is inspired by The Sims and tasks players with slowly building up a functional town with water supplies, crops and storage facilities, with a weekly prize pool for the most successful players. It’s also the home of Mirandus, a fantasy-style adventure game where players must fight monsters, develop their land and collaborate with others, and Spider Tanks, a multiplayer tank-battle game with a range of different maps and dozens of high-powered weapons.

Gala Games was originally built on Ethereum but now runs on the much faster Polygon network and BNB Chain, ensuring rapid transactions with lower fees. The GALA token is an ERC-20 token that’s used for rewards, in-game purchases and governance.

With plenty of new games in the pipeline for 2025, Gala Games, with its community of more than 1.3 million active players, is clearly one of the top Web3 gaming platforms to watch.
