24-year-old woman swept out to sea while doing yoga
A 24-year-old Russian tourist was swept out to sea while doing yoga along a rocky beach in Thailand. She remains missing.
A 24-year-old Russian tourist doing seaside yoga was reportedly swept away by a giant wave in Thailand.
Kamilla Beliatskaya was exercising near the rocky shores of a popular scenic spot in the city of Koh Samui when she was engulfed, according to Bangkok outlet Khaosad English.
Witnesses said the victim, described by some media outlets as an aspiring actor, tried to get back to the shore, but didn’t have enough strength to battle the choppy waves that reportedly reached neary ten feet.
“As soon as she was washed away, the girl managed to swim out, screaming with the last of her strength and trying to stay on her back,” one witness told Russian news outlet Rossiyskaya Gazeta.
The incident happened Sunday around 1 p.m. after jet ski operators suspended their activities because of the hazardous waters, according to Khaosad English. Rescue efforts were reportedly suspended after 30 minutes due to the unsafe conditions.
The victim’s boyfriend was said to have been in the area, but on a higher plateau. Video shows a pink yoga mat being tossed about rough waters with Beliatskaya nowhere to be seen.
Samui Rescue Center representative Chaiyaporn Subprasert told Khaosad English that tourists are warned to avoid swimming areas during monsoon season, Beliatskaya may have thought she was was safe because the area where she was doing yoga was a lookout spot more so than a beach.
